Cluster server with one quorum and 4+ nodes

So for some time now I have wanted to do something big with my server setup. I have experimented with standard file storage server and vm’s along with iscsi and also implemented my hardware firewall, all of which have been great fun to build, but as everything goes, onwards and upwards. So now I have decided to implement a cluster to give my centred quorum that extra power it needs, power to reduce load on backups whilst sharing files or running more vm’s. Where do i start though? I will be running off of windows 2003 and I know there are packages within that to setup clusters, are there any good guides to help me? I have an idea of the nodes that I shall be using so that is not an issue but will it be ok to run them via a gigabit switch instead of iscsi or fc? Any help would be greatly appreciated, just want to do some forward thinking before starting.

Help with tumblr activity/followers and hash tagging with twitter

Recently I have started placing hash tags into my tumblr posts/titles in order that when I create a post, the hash tags are already placed on twitter. My point is will this affect my activity on here or will it not make a difference? Ever since I have done this I have not had any new followers. For the next few posts I am not going to place any hash tags in my posts and I am also not going to link this account to my twitter anymore. I am going to manually submit the links to the blogposts using google url shortening tool, which also let me track activity from twitter. What are your thoughts? Do you have any problems with this?

Why is SEO important to you?

In simple terms #money. #Profits can be made from websites and displaying adverts, which is what adsense is for. Lets start off first easy to get you started. SEO is search engine optimisation, this method gets your website higher up the page ranking in Google. If you are on one of the first three pages of Google or any search engine (preferably the first page) your going to get traffic.

Simple ways that you can optimise your site are by linking your title, description and content to your key words in the meta tags of your site. These are the elements that any search engine’s use to find out how relevant your website is to the search terms used. These are often static and work extremely well with static pages. However, many successful/dynamic/live pages will make these dynamic; constantly changing to make the ranking better.

Another method is to get people or ask people to link their site to yours. This will not only draw more traffic towards yours but is showing Google that your site website has importance. This will also rank your page higher up in the google rankings. This is slightly more complicated and most people will not want to do this as it draws traffic away, it is always worth trying though.

There are many sites that you can use to optimise things such as your keywords or description or just analyse to see how good your current ones are. Google analytic’s does this and determines more keywords that could be used as well or in place of the ones you have.

Gmate - Unlock for all iPhone’s and dual sim via Bluethooth

I came across this #device the other day that may be of use to many of you unlockers of the iPhone 4s/4 and 3Gs. As you are well aware of the moment there is no unlock for many of the new baseband’s that apple have released. This device does not unlock the iPhone as such like gevey or ultrasn0w do, but simply by passes/works around the fact of an unlock.

The device in affect is a mobile phone without a display or interface. It connects to your iPhone or android device via bluetooth and is operated through its own app. Through the app (which is very much laid out the same as iPhone/android interface) you can make calls, text and use the internet from the sim card in the Gmate. The Gmate isn’t unlocked to a provider so can use any sim, this works with GSM and CDMA standards.

This also acts as a modern standard dual sim card add-on for your smart phone. Where as most adapters only give you the ability to use one sim card at any given time, this gives you the ability to use both at the same time 24/7. The device is battery by a removable/rechargeable battery and last 4 hours on calls/ 96 hours on standby.

I am using this device temporarily whilst I become a 3month customer to the carrier of my phone. When this 3 month period is up, I will get a factory unlock on the phone and then I will no longer require this device. However, this device could be used long term and I will very much like to keep this device for future purposes.

Nightmares of the Forum…

So today has been, lets say, #interesting. I found out today from the use of Google URL shortening tool, that co.cc has been blocked from Google’s index. Doh! So, I decided to purchase a .co.uk; www.mattstechtips.co.uk to be more precise. But as hosting goes, this meant that I needed to make some changes. 000.hosting.com allows you to have sections for each domain that you have. So I happily delete the section for my old URL www.matts-tech-tips.co.cc with all of my databases on and forum that was perfectly working. That was wrong, I forgot to back up in order to do a direct swap, double doh! So, I have had to spend all day remaking the forum which is actually fine but I lost all of my users =(. So I am basically starting from Scratch, which is actually ok cause I can SEO and see if people are actually finding my site other than just friends. Saying this I could of viewed this anyway from all the new members that signed up (if anyone signs up), Nvm. Lesson Well learnt. Looks like I am back to an empty, even more dead site.

#Tablet #computers taken to the next level! #Microsoft #Windows 7 and #touch screens has really made the #iPad look rather small in comparison. Even though the touch screen was a little too respnsive to touch and defiantly needs software attention, it was pretty cool. Where as the iPad, iPhone and touch are all sensitive to touch, this tablet computer recognised and profiled each finger differntly. This was displayed on the screen as each finger having a different coloured circle around it. If you want to see these tables they are at the Salford Media Centre in  Salford University building in Manchester. I hope we see more of this kind of stuff hitting consumer markets, but I do wonder how protective the coffee table is too liquid…said the super coke….

Apple and their Technical Support is Absolutely Shocking!

As I have blogged in the past couple of days or so you all know that I have an iPhone 4, even though I still can’t use it (UltraSn0w is still waiting to be updated with the new BB’s.) Anyway, so I checked out on Apple’s self service to see what my iPhone was locked too and if anything worrying had been flagged up against the phone etc… The iPhone stated online that it was unlocked to everything minus Vodafone and Virgin media. I thought that this was odd as it was stated when I purchased the mobile that it was locked to T-Mobile only. So, I tried to see if there was a number that I could ring so that I could get this issue solved in slightly more detail by a member of Apple’s staff.

This is where the issues started. For one Apples have this rubbish voice recognition system in their support line which does not work! I had to try 3 -4 times for it just to recognise my phone number, let alone my serial number. The second problem using this method was that I needed to purchase a one time only or one year cover of iCare even to talk to someone! I was like yeah right and put the phone down, thinking I will have to just go into the store and get it investigated.

So, the next day which happened to be a Saturday, I make my way to the Apple store in Manchester, a good 2 hours out of my days for a 5 minute talk. The apple store is always busy from people just loitering in the store including the staff it seems. Anyway, I managed to get a hold of one their staff to ask them if they could answer this question. I queue up at the back of the store to see if I can manage to speak to someone about the issue.

I get seen to which was fantastic but for a good 5 to 10mins was just was ignored by the member of staff looking after the queue. He asked me what my issue was and promptly got someone to look into the case straight away for me, which again was brilliant, as i didn’t want to be waiting around.

The guy checks on the stores system to see what the phone was locked too, we get chatting and he see’s that I have a 3G already in my hand and recognises that it isn’t working properly. He then pushes a sale pitch saying that I can get a new iPhone today for £119, even though he can see that I have just purchased an iPhone 4? I state that even if I wanted too, I have an iPhone 4 now and also that it was jailbroken. I then promptly and openly say that even if this phone is locked to T-Mobile i will jailbreak it anyway. He then replies and you wonder why your iPhone 3G is broken like that?

I really wanted to say hang on pal, are you trying to scare me today so that I buy something from you? It isn’t going to happen. I also wanted to say software would not induce physical hardware damaged, jailbreaking my iPhone has nothing to do with the fact that my screen is not lighting up properly! What an arse! He wasn’t even a genius he was just a standard member of staff.

Anyway the iPhone details finally comes up on the screen saying locked to T-Mobile and Orange. Hands me back the phone saying yeah the phone isn’t unlocked you phone is locked to T-Mobile, nothing that they can do. He wouldn’t even check to see what the online system said and barely listened to what I had to say. He then said that you should never ever by second hand products and asked me how much I had paid for the item. I stated £360 which for a 2 month old iPhone how can you go wrong? He said that for £465 you could of had a brand new one unlocked, (another sales pitch). I was thinking, I already have an iPhone 4 you idiot, are you blind? Are you actually blind? Plus do I look like a rich working man, I’m pretty sure I look like a student I even told him that.

My point is, why are the two systems saying different things about the same product? It does not make sense. Why was I constantly being tried to be sold stuff? Apples support is rubbish and I am actually really dissapointed, every possibility they have they try to make money, it is actually pathetic. I spend money on their item and then they try to do you over by scaring you. It s rubbish. I don’t know any company who is this bad with support, every time I have needed support for a product I get it, there was no general way of getting in contact with Apple, nothing. I just cannot wait for the new unlock to be released and then I can use the beauty what is the iPhone 4. Products are great, support is awful what a shame. Well, I suppose if you need something doing, do it yourself.

Another ranting geek signing out.

Once again, technology has let me down.

I cannot believe this, the one day I need something just to work and let me get on with things and it stops working or is so slow! I thought I would be OK by taking install disk into university today to install onto my freshly installed Windows 7 operating system but no, nothing is ever that simple.

For some unknown reason my cd is not reading in this laptop. It sees all the files and everything but will just not execute, even after copying the image and then mounting it virtually it does not work either. What is going on!? So thinking its fine I will just download a copy legally from Microsoft and be on my merry way. Is the internet fast? No, I am getting 30kb’s a second and it is going to take 3 hours to complete! This is not even funny! Its not even that I am out of range on the wireless I have 5 bars!?

Any ideas at what I should do. Come share it on the forum
